DUNDEE CVIP at Computing School of Science and Engineering:  Computer vision and Image Processing (CVIP) (Trucco, McKenna, Zhang) is an internationally visible group for Computer Vision and Medical Image Analysis. The group attracts substantial investment for interdisciplinary research on data science technologies including healthcare-oriented research (e.g. £1.1M EPSRC multimodal retinal biomarkers for vascular dementia, €3M EU ITN REVAMMAD, £7M NIHR Global Health Chennai-Scotland Diabetes Unit, all in collaboration with the Dundee School of Medicine, UK and international partners) and human-centred data and image analysis (e.g. £1M EP/N014278/1 augmenting communications for language prediction with University of Cambridge, £335K EP/D080053/1 video-based animation of people). CVIP Academic collaborations include Edinburgh, Cambridge, KCL, QUB, UCL Moorfields and Warwick in the UK; Charitè Berlin, INRIA, Padova, Harvard, Tufts, UCLA, Singapore, Chennai Diabetes Care Sun Yat-Sen, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and A-STAR (Singapore) abroad. CVIP operates three DL-dedicated servers with state-of-the-art NVIDIA GPUs and works closely with the School of Medicine’s Health Informatics Centre to develop a secure software development enviroment for deep learning with the secure, ISO-certified local Safe Haven, managing research access to hundreds of thousands of clinical images and cross-linked data. VAMPIRE was the first group to run home-grown, non-commercial image analysis software in the HIC safe haven, currently used (among others) in a £7M NIHR project on precision medicine for diabetes.

DUNDEE Computing: Research in the discipline of Computing, School of Science and Engineering (SSEN), focuses mostly on Human-Centred Computing (assistive technologies, augmentative communications, human-computer interaction) and Intelligent Systems (Argumentation Theory, CVIP, space research). In REF2014 it ranked 3rd in Scotland with 68% of computing research ranked world-leading or internationally excellent, particularly strong in Research Environment and Impact. Computing offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees on applied computing, computer science and specialisms related to research, including contributions to further degrees in SSEN (e.g. biomedical engineering) and beyond.

The University of Dundee (https://www.dundee.ac.uk/) is committed to transform lives, locally and globally, through the creation and sharing of knowledge. It is home to more than 17,000 students (25% from outside the UK) and 3,000 staff within Scotland’s most student-friendly city. Dundee has been rated consistently best in Scotland for overall student satisfaction in the UK (Times Higher Education student experience survey) and internationally (International Student Barometer).
